Over 1,000 Trees Planted to Commemorate World Environment Day – June 5, 2025
In a bold step toward environmental friendliness and sustainability, Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, has launched the BenPoly Green Legacy Initiative, ‘Greening Benpoly’, by planting over 1,000 trees across its campus to commemorate World Environment Day 2025.
🌱 A New Chapter in Eco-Conscious Leadership
The event, led by the Rector, Arc. Dr. Henry Ojobo, and his Management team, marks the first major activity under the newly established Directorate of Environmental Management and Climate Change (DEMCC).
The initiative is not only aimed at beautifying the campus but also making a meaningful contribution to global efforts in combating climate change.
🗣 “A Historic Day for BenPoly”
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ojobo commended the overwhelming turnout of staff, students, and development partners, describing the day as historic for the institution.
“The Environment is the bedrock of our health and future,” Dr. Ojobo said.
“This initiative is more than tree planting; it is a powerful educational tool and a legacy of responsibility. We are taking deliberate steps to reduce our carbon footprint, and we hope to set a precedent for other institutions in the region and Nigeria at large.”
He noted that the Green Legacy Initiative reflects the Polytechnic’s renewed commitment to sustainability, aligning with the climate-conscious leadership of the Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormen Alia.
🌍 One Tree, One Name — A Legacy of Responsibility
The Rector revealed that each tree planted is tagged to a specific individual, encouraging a deep sense of ownership and responsibility within the Polytechnic community.
“We want this to inspire everyone—staff, students, and the larger community—to go home and plant trees in their own neighborhoods. Sustainability begins with action,” he added.
He expressed sincere gratitude to Governor Alia for the financial and moral support provided to the institution, making the initiative possible.
Dr. Ojobo also extended a call to action to individuals, NGOs, and development partners to support and expand the Green Legacy Initiative.
🗨 Long-Term Vision and Strategic Partnerships
In a post-event interview, Mr. John Ekere Ameh, the pioneer Director of the Directorate, shared insights into the program’s long-term goals:
“Every tree has a caretaker. This model ensures accountability and care for each sampling. Beyond today, we plan to institutionalize environmental consciousness through seminars, workshops, and continuous tree planting drives across campus.”
Also speaking, Deputy Director Town Planner Tyonum Emmanuel hinted at strategic partnerships being explored:
“We are reaching out to both local and international partners—including the United Nations and other environmentally focused organizations—to support and expand our work.”
🌿 A Testament to Climate Leadership
The Green Legacy Initiative stands as a testament to Benue State Polytechnic’s resolve to be a leading voice in climate action—setting a practical example of how institutions can shape a greener and more sustainable future.
